Wine notes for this week!
Lobo e Falcão Branco 2016
Tejo, Portugal 13% abv
A blend of native Portuguese grape Fernão Pires, plus Alvarinho
and Moscatel (aka Albariño and Muscat), which thrive in the
estate's sandy soils and ripen to perfection under the Portuguese
sun. Gentle oak aging imparts further richness and roundness.
Aromas of juicy, ripe peach, hints of cedar and orange blossom,
followed by rich, bright flavours of stone fruit, spice and grapey
freshness. This is a top pick solo or with Asian style meals,
seafood or vegetarian dishes.
Long Live the King 2015
King Valley, Australia 11.5% abv
Not many have heard of King Valley, but this cool climate
enclave in Victoria is a gem when it comes to producing delicious,
crisp, fruit filled whites. This bright, elegant Pinot Grigio is
crisp and delicious with green apple fruit and spice
flavours. Enjoy with a seafood platter or spicy Asian
La Révélation Roussanne 2016
New South Wales, Australia 12.5% abv £8.99
La Révélation uses pure Roussanne - one of the much-loved white
Rhône varieties - sourced from old, high altitude vineyards. Hence
the wine's elegance and zip. With ripe peach, herb and white pepper
flavours, this rounded white is tasty solo and a treat with white
meats, and creamy fish, too.
Ca' Bolani Frizzante Prosecco
Prosecco, Italy 10.5% abv
Prosecco is as Italian as gelato, enjoyed in some circles on a
daily basis! The best are the delicious, handcrafted versions from
artisan producers like the Zonin family, winemakers since 1821.
Winemaker Marco Rabino favours the frizzante style - a gentle
mousse rather than the full fizz of Champagne, it's light, zippy
and refreshing - brimful of crisp pear and citrus flavours.
Pillastro Rosato 2015
Puglia, Italy 13% abv
Angelo Maci is a leading figure in Puglia's quality wine
revolution of the last 20 years. Every year he makes our
bestselling Pillastro red from Primitivo and Negroamaro. Now he
charms us with this pretty pink rosé. It's pure Primitivo, picked
early for freshness and juice left briefly on skins for that
vibrant pink hue. Carefully vinified, this wine offers a burst of
summer berry fruit, light spice and refreshment. As delicious solo
as with food.
Purple Owl Pinot Noir 2016
California, USA 13.5% abv
A welcome return of one of our favourite wines of 2017. Purple
Owl is no ordinary Pinot Noir. The grapes for this juicy red are
sourced from only the finest vineyards on California's Central
Coast. It has layers of vibrant cherry and raspberry fruit flavours
and a lovely silky texture too. Try with chicken in red wine sauce
or your favourite cheeses
Patronus Shiraz 2016
Barossa Valley, Australia 14.5% abv
Patronus is a beautifully smooth, complex example of the
Barossa's famous reds, crafted by one of the region's oldest
winemaking families. Patronus comes from a plot of old vines where
the amount of fruit is miserly but the quality is heavenly. The
beautifully rounded 2016 has ripe black fruit with a hint of oak.
Enjoy with char-grilled steak or lamb kebabs.
Tuscany, Italy 13% abv
Crafted by Simona Barbanera on her family's Tuscan estate,
Saracosa blends Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot - the
classic Super Tuscan recipe. Part oak-aged for tantalising
complexity, the wine's dense dark cherry and chocolatey tones make
this a serious choice for pasta with a pork ragù or bistecca alla
fiorentina (steak with cannellini beans in tomato sauce).
Don Manuel Carmenère 2016
Rapel Valley, Chile 13.5% abv
Carmenère is Chile's gift to the wine world and this gorgeously
rich and smooth Single Vineyard version is a sublime example. It's
from one of Chile's oldest estates, Viña La Rosa, and reveals
luscious wild berry flavours with a layer of smoky spice. With full
flavours of cassis and dark chocolate with hints of spice, this
will sing with roast duck or lamb.
Puglia, Italy 13.5% abv
Find your biggest glasses and pull up a comfy chair because you
won't want to move until you've drained every last drop of this
spectacular southern Italian red. It's a blend of smoky Nero
di Troia, berry ripe Negroamaro and plummy Primitivo, sourced from
gnarled bush vines. High summer temperatures ensure the grapes
struggle for water, resulting in fruit of tremendous concentration.
Partial oak ageing gives a smooth, refined finish to this ripe,
balanced red. It's a lovely solo sipper and a great match for
