A Rebellion Inspired Poem
02 February 2023
Every so often we are sent something inspired by our brewery and
beers and we love to see what you can do. Recently we were sent a
poem.
For context, Rebellion was started in 1993 by Mark and Tim, who
were friends from their school days in Marlow.
Here's Mark to explain more…
"Tony was a teacher at Sir William Borlase School during the
years Tim & I were at the school between 1975 - 1981. He taught
English & History. He now lives in his retirement in County
Durham, but keeps a keen interest in what goes on at the school and
Marlow generally. He has followed Rebellion's progress and got in
touch with us after seeing the Lloyds Bank adverts in the national
press. We sent him a Christmas advent case with beer and the socks,
and this has prompted him to write the poem.
He was particularly keen to explain the significance of the
final line. William McGonagall was a famous Scottish poet who was
known for writing fairly poor poetry, which he developed into a
special style. In fact, McGonagall wrote about 200 poems, including
"The Tay Bridge Disaster" and
"The Famous Tay Whale", which are
widely regarded as some of the worst in English literature. West
Street's Percy Bysshe refers to the poet Shelley who lived in
Marlow, next to the school with Mary Shelley who wrote
Frankenstein."
Thank you very much Tony for sending this to us.
